Beyoncé Vs whitney

I guess everyone here has seen and listened to Beyoncé's performance of the american anthem for President Barack Obama's second inauguration on Monday. Now the rumor is she didn't sing it live but that the version was pre-recorded.

I don't really care if she sang live or not, (for the record, Kelly Clarkson did sing live), but recorded or not, I still can't find anyone able to sing the american national anthem like Whitney. I still get goose bumps listening to her performance during 1991 Superbowl!

I have never followed Beyonce and like Bieber, I couldn't name one of their songs if my life depended on it, but I didn't like her version of our national anthem, and wasnt overly impressed with Kelly Clarkson either.

I like some Beyoncé's songs and I think she has an amazing voice but her performance was underwhelming imho, she's acting more and more like a diva lately, and no one will ever top Witheny's voice, Houston was one of a kind.

I don't have an opinion of her either way as I've never followed her but didn't like her diva performance.

Whitney's voice was pre-recorded too. But yeah I love that version too.

Didn't watch the videos, but if the brief bit of the anthem I caught on the radio the other day in a shop is anything to go by then Beyonce, whether precorded or not, sounded like a cat being strangled.

Aww, Whitney, so sad. Her version is amazing. It's a notoriously difficult song and being outside and in the cold, I can't blame Beyonce for pre-recording but she probably should have cooled it with the extra drama of pulling out her earpiece when she wasn't actually singing live.

Exactly, I agree! B. is a great singer but actually she tends to always act as everything was about her and this time it really wasn't...:P
Whiteny's version still give me goose bumps, she was so amazing, and the funny thing is that, listening to her singing it, she makes it look so damn simple and easy, as if we could all sing like this, while we clearly can't!

There's no doubt about the fact that Beyonce can sing. However it irks me when singers change the melody of the song and do all that vocal acrobatic stuff. It's like they're trying to prove that they really can sing. (I'm sure there's a musical term for vocal acrobatics, but I can't think of it right now.) So many singers these days perform like that and in my opinion it takes away from the beauty and the wonder of the simple melody.

This is why I much prefer Whitney Houston's version of the American National Anthem. There was a little bit of extra stuff, but not so much that the melody was completely changed.

I totally second everything you said! Whitney was so amazingly talented, and equally troubled woman and it's a crying shame we lost her angel voice.
I also agree about the senseless use of "vocal acrobatic stuff", I don't know the right word either, I usually call them vocal virtuosities, and many singers tend to exaggerate...since we are speaking of Beyoncé, we all know she can sing, no need to overdo...!
